Performing outside a traditional theatre opens up new possibilities for storytelling and audience engagement. This workshop explores how to adapt improv to outdoor, unconventional, or site-specific locations. Participants will experiment with spatial awareness, audience placement, and environmental storytelling, learning to use surrounding - including weather, natural sounds, and architectural features - as active elements in the performance. We will also explore non-verbal techniques, using movement, gesture, and visual focus to shape scenes when conventional theatre tools are not available.
Working in non-traditional spaces encourages performers to think creatively about improv as an art form, expanding the possibilities of where and how shows can exist beyond standard performance venues. Participants are encouraged to bring their own show ideas or formats in progress. Through discussion and practical exercises, we will explore ways to make scenes feel dynamic, responsive, and visually engaging in any space. The aim is to help performers develop flexibility, creativity, and heightened awareness of their environment while maintaining strong audience connection.
By the end, students will leave with practical strategies for adapting their shows to a wide variety of locations, enhancing both performance flexibility and audience engagement. This workshop is ideal for performers interested in exploring unconventional staging, environmental storytelling, and expanding the possibilities of improv beyond traditional performance spaces.
